1997 SondageIn October 1997 trial excavations were carried out by Jon Price, Andrew Robertshaw and Alistair Fraser, assisted by members of Avril's family. A section was cut at the south end of the uncontrolled excavation of the communication trench, and exploratory trenches cut to look for a possible diagonal trench identified from contemporary aerial photographs.No diagonal trench was found, however examination of the section allowed a preliminary phasing of the site to be made. This showed seven clear phases of activity from initial construction to final covering up of the trench. Cleaning of the base of the trench below the section revealed a drain and sump beneath a carefully laid brick/tile floor. Finds included a fired .303 round from Phase D, and a reused Lebel round from Phase A. |
