Excavating west from the cellar entrance. The anomalous rectangular brick structure can be seen behind the furthest digger. the size of the cut in which it sits can be clearly seen behind the wheelbarrows.

2001 Excavations

We returned in March 2000 with a smaller team intending to carry out the heavy excavation of the presumed shellhole on the West end of the trench. The team was made up of Jon Price, Andy Robertshaw, Alastair Fraser, Volker Hartmann, Keith Madison, Alan Prior, Ian Wedge, and Steve Roberts.

The well made brick floor continued, with a clear cut for a sump. The trench cut continued undamaged, howevber it was superimposed by a large square cut which contained a brick base. The cut was more than a metre wider than the brick base and had clean vertical sides. The brick base continued north under the foundations of Avril's house. This structure clearly postdates the rubble infilling of the trench, but predates the existing house.

The prospect of removing the structure was not good, so a sleeper and angle-iron retaining wall was built at this point. A total of 78 .303 rounds were found, plus one Lebel, as well as the usual selection of empty food cans, all from the fill of the trench below the rubble backfill.
