1999 Excavations
In April 1999 the project returned
to 10 rue Delattre. Team size was down but this was more than made up
for by the enthusiasm of the diggers. The team was made up of Jon Price,
Andy Robertshaw, Alastair Fraser, Gervaise Webb, and Jasper Richmond.
The trench was excavated
even further south for another four meters revealing that the brick
floor continued along the whole length exposed. End of war equipment dumping
revealed a huge assemblage of .303 rounds, and on the floor of the trench
the most stereotypical find yet: the remains of a mouth organ.
Examination of new
(old!) aerial photography appeared to indicate a large shell or bomb crater
at the north of the site, just where we were having difficulty detecting
sensible stratigraphy. Preliminary field walking (well strolling) by Alastair
started to turn up traces of other trench features picked up on the APs. |
